NetApp Expands Its STEM Data Explorers Training Program

NetApp has confirmed that it will expand its training program in STEM Data Explorers disciplines, with the aim of reaching 5,000 more students in the next two years. Primarily aimed at teenagers, this is an after-school program that tries to promote equality in STEM skills and allows high school students to develop critical skills in data science.

The program, in which more than 2,000 students from four countries have already participated, uses real data sets that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. its topics range from quality education to health equality and climate change.

Another purpose of this program is to encourage participating students to analyze data from their communities and, with the help of NetApp volunteers, encourage them to manage projects on social issues. This helps them learn how to apply the data in different professions.

Data Explorers encourages work with local NGOs dedicated to promoting STEM disciplines, youth development and education. Especially, with those that bring these experiences, free of charge, to students from groups with less representation in the world of science and technology.

According to José Petisco, General Director of NetApp for Iberiain the company, “Addressing the needs of underrepresented populations is critical to our social impact goals. As the leader in cloud and data-driven solutions, we recognize data fluency as one of the many skills needed for future STEM careers, or any career. We believe that data empowers students to become change agents and make the world a better place. That’s why we’re focused on filling the big gaps in data education, especially in underserved communities. We are convinced that all students should be able to take advantage of the full potential that data offers”.
