New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros: Apple raises the bar

According to the latest information, Apple will present the new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros this October 18 at an event that, as our colleagues from MuyComputer have told us, will also serve as the stage for the presentation of the Apple M1X, a new SoC with which the apple company promises to mark an important advance over the previous generation.

Among the most important keys that we can highlight in these new MacBook Pro is the use of Mini-LED panels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, the introduction of an SD UHS-II card reader, which translates into higher performance when using these types of storage solutions, support for MagSafe technology, more connectivity options, and the jump to Apple’s M1X SoC, a chip that, as we have indicated, will be a significant improvement.

Focusing on said chip, the latest rumors suggest that it will come equipped with a high-performance 10-core CPU and a high-efficiency 2-core CPU, which would leave us with a total of 12 cores, although nothing prevents Apple from offering a version with 10 cores as a base configuration. This would have a high-performance 8-core and high-efficiency 2-core split.

The GPU of the Apple M1X SoC, which will be the heart of the new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros, will have a base configuration of 16 graphics cores, and could come with up to 32 graphics cores. We do not know to what extent it will improve performance, but in principle it would be normal for it to be comparable to a low-end dedicated graphics card. If the latest forecasts are met, it will be manufactured in a 5 nm process, and TSMC will be in charge of its production.

Returning to the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros, it is also said that Apple could change the base configuration of these two computers, and that instead of starting with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD they would do so from a configuration of 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The improvement would be very big, but we will have to wait to see if it is really confirmed.

Finally, it is also rumored that the new MacBook Pros will have a webcam with 1080p resolution. The prices have not transcended, but it will not take long to know them, since Apple prepares an event that will take place on October 18.
