New AMD driver breaks booting, don’t install it yet!

One of the stigmas that AMD has over it is about the quality of its graphics drivers, no matter how much their quality improves over time, that thorn is still there. Every bad news related to these is magnified and every good thing is ignored or belittled. It is the case of the new drivers, Adrenalin version 23.2.1we find one of lime and another of sand.

When a new graphics driver is released, it is usually accompanied by a note specifying the improvements it brings, which applications are improved by the new version of the driver, which problems have been fixed and which remain to be fixed. So eternally which Sisyphus dragging the rock down the slope so that it falls again. This is a task that AMD, NVIDIA and Intel have to do all the time, especially to support the latest games, but every once in a while a version comes out that breaks things.

What problems do the AMD Adrenalin 23.2.1 drivers give?

If you’re an AMD RX 6000, RX 7000, or any of the AMD Ryzen 6000 or 7000 series laptop graphics card users, then you may be interested to know that AMD’s new graphics driver targeting GPUs with RDNA 2 and 3 architectures may cause hang on your PC. All this due to the fact that it makes changes in the boot options that can cause the system to crash or not boot from the drive it should. In that case you will have to access the system BIOS and change the order of priority of the units, you do not need to reinstall the operating system again.

At the same time, we recommend you to use the DDU application, Display Driver Uninstaller, if you see that the problem persists and it insists on continuing to touch the system BIOS once you have managed to boot Windows successfully. Thanks to this application you can eliminate the trace of a bad driver and its pernicious effects on the system. As a last note in this section, we recommend you disable Fast Boot, since the AMD Adrenalin 23.2.1 drivers give problems with this boot option.

What does the new driver bring us?

Well, as always, a series of optimizations for a series of games, where new releases such as Forspoken and the Dead Space remake stand out. As well as some already somewhat veteran games such as:

  • Spider-Man +4% in 4K.
  • Sniper Elite 5 +3% in 4K.
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider +6% in 4K.
  • Quake II RTX +7% in 4K.
  • Hitman 3 +4% in 4K.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy +6% in 4K.
  • Hogwarts Legacy +4% in 4K.
  • Borderlands 3 +4% in 4K.
  • Doom Eternal +9% in 4K
  • F1 2022 +19% in 4K.

The figures have been obtained with an RX 6950 XT in Adrenalin 23.2.1 compared to the previous driver, so we have to expect that in these games at a lower resolution an equal or higher jump under the same model. On the other hand, we are surprised that AMD itself does not take its RX 7900 XTX as a reference, which is its most powerful graphics card model today. However, for us the most notable thing is the fact that certain improvements for streaming that until now only the RX 7000 had have been added to the previous generation, which is very good news, as it is one of the subjects pending in the Radeon.
