New Battlefield in pre-production: Will it repeat the mistakes of Battlefield 2042?

Battlefield 2042 has been a tremendous failure, so much so that not only has it become the worst installment in the franchise but it also remains one of the lowest rated games on Steam, a dubious honor that is obvious when we read in said store that 3,133 recent reviews have been “extremely negative”. Not negative or “mostly negative”, but “extremely”.

Those of you who regularly read us already know my opinion, I think Battlefield 2042 is not as terribly bad a game as some make it out to be. It’s fun and you can play, although it’s true that there are things that could be improved, that at a technical level it hit the market in a mess and that it’s not at the level it should be. It is not normal for a triple A title to present a 40% bottleneck at GPU level in 1440p with everything maxed out and ray tracing enabled.

The fact is that, despite all the efforts that EA is making to raise Battlefield 2042, these are not bearing fruit at the moment. The situation is complicated, so much so that said game has dropped in price by 50%, and we have already seen information indicating that EA could turn it, partially or totally, into a free game with micropayments. What can I say, it is an option, and the truth is that it could contribute to giving him a second chance.

We don’t have a crystal ball to see into the future, but after the latest Battlefield 2042 crusade I’m afraid that his short-term future looks pretty bleakUnless EA pulls out some ace up his sleeve that allows him to work a real miracle, and frankly, I see this as unlikely. The only option that could work that miracle would be to make it a free game, and even then I have my doubts.

EA and DICE are already working on a new Battlefield

Another option would be turn page directly launching a new game. It wouldn’t fix the fiasco that has been Battlefield 2042, but launching a new installment in the franchise ahead of schedule would help both overcome that failure, and give them a chance to show the world that they’re capable of doing things right.

According to Tom Henderson, DICE has recognized that learned valuable lessons, although he has not delved into them. However, most of them are appreciated without any effort: it is not a good idea to launch a game without the campaign mode, it is not advisable to introduce radical and inappropriate changes in the gameplay, and finally, a triple A title of this caliber cannot be launched with such a mediocre technical finish, and so poorly optimized.

The same source indicates that DICE has already started the pre-production stage for the next installment in the franchise. He has also said that it could be based on A near futurelike Battlefield 2042, and that does not rule out a release in 2023. This date makes sense because it would allow DICE and EA to turn the page and forget about Battlefield 2042 as soon as possible, and also because there will be no new Call of Duty in that year, which equals less competition. However, it is unlikely due to a matter of time, since DICE would have to run a lot to finish the game in just over a year.
