Good news for Galaxy S20 owners. Even though Samsung has confirmed that its old flagships will not receive Android 14, they will still be able to benefit from a final One UI update. Indeed, the manufacturer is currently testing One UI 5.1 on the Galaxy S20.
In February 2022, Samsung announced that it now plans to offer 4 years of Android updates to its latest smartphones. However, this new policy only concerns smartphones launched since the Galaxy S21, and not before. And in other words, no Android 14 for the Galaxy S20s, much to the chagrin of owners of these beloved flagships.
Be careful though, we know that the S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra will continue to receive Android security updates until March 2025. Admittedly, their deployment will be done at a lower frequency, but that’s always the case.
And if, as said above, the S20 range will not taste the joys of Android 14, it will still benefit from new features with the arrival of One UI 5.1. Indeed, our colleagues from SamMobile have just confirmed that the S20 will receive the latest version of the manufacturer’s in-house overlay based on Android 13.
Samsung is currently testing One UI 5.1 on the Galaxy S20
Specifically, the South Korean firm has started testing One UI 5.1 internally on the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. According to information gleaned from the company’s servers, this firmware version has the following serial number: G980FXXUFHWA1.
As mentioned by our colleagues from SamMobilethe fact that the 10th letter of the firmware is an H indicates that it is a major software update. For good reason, the S20s currently running One UI 5.0 have the letter G in the 10th position in their firmware version.
This is therefore good news for Galaxy S20 owners, who will be able to access new features one last time. In a press release published in October 2022, Samsung unveiled some of the new features present in One UI 5.1, starting with the integration of a greater number of customization options for the lock screen and the notification window.
As a reminder, Samsung has also started testing One UI 5.1 on the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. In addition, we know that the new overlay will equip the Galaxy S23, whose official presentation is still expected for February 1. 2023.
