Only two out of every 1,000 SMEs in Spain are recognized as innovative

Infoempresa.com has presented an analysis of certified companies with official seal of Innovation. According to data provided by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain has 3,118 companies with the “innovative SME” seal. This recognition is granted to small and medium-sized companies for their great activity in R+D+i.

Regarding the distribution of companies recognized as innovative, Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia host more than 62%. However, the weight of these in the business fabric of each community varies.

Spain has 1,576,739 commercial companies with economic activity[2]and only 3,118 are considered innovative (1.98 companies per 1,000).

In relation to the volume of total active companies of each CC.AA., Navarre, Catalonia and Madrid, register the highest ratio of certifications of innovative companies. Navarre has 2.92 companies for every 1,000 active commercial companies. While Catalonia registers a ratio of 2.72‰ and Madrid with 2.41‰. Compared to these, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Castilla-La Mancha are the regions with the lowest ratio of active innovative organizations with 0.80‰, 0.98‰ and 1.13‰, respectively.

The average age of companies with the innovative SME seal reaches 17 years and 37% are less than 10 years old.

The 3,118 SMEs classified as innovative by the Ministry of Science and Innovation can combine incentives and tax advantages that favor their development and promote their growth. In fact, they get tax relief for investment and innovation.

Spain has more than 100 innovative groups

In Spain there are also 107 business clusters registered in the register of Innovative Business Groups (AEI) of the Directorate General for Industry and SMEs. All of them host a total of 9,143 SMEs.

By sectors of activity, the following stand out: ICT (with 2,229 SMEs and 24% of the total), environment and energy (with 1,158 SMEs and 13% of the total) and agri-food (with 990 SMEs and 11% of the total).
