Palo Alto Networks buys cybersecurity provider Cider Security

Palo Alto Networks has confirmed that it has reached a agreement to buy security and supply chain software provider Cider Security for an amount of around 195 million dollars in cash. Palo Alto Networks plans with this operation happen because Cider provides support so that its Prisma Cloud platform has more security during the entire life cycle of the application. That is, from the code to the cloud.

If all goes according to plan, the purchase transaction will close during Palo Alto Networks’ second fiscal year 2023. As the company commented in the statement confirming the operation, due to the diversity and speed of the current software engineering ecosystem, as well as its dynamic nature, new challenges and gaps to be filled in the world of safety. This has led to the software supply chain becoming one of the largest and most important emerging attack vectors for attackers.

Additionally, the average integration and distribution channel can have hundreds of development tools connected, posing a significant security risk. Until now, a lot of importance has been given to the origin of the code, let alone the applications and software used in the development pipeline, which has led to numerous problems.

According to Lee Klarich, Product Manager, Palo Alto Networks«Any organization using the public cloud has an application infrastructure with hundreds of tools and applications that can access your code. Still, they have limited visibility into their settings, or whether they are secure. Cider has made it possible to connect with the infrastructure, analyze the tools and identify the risks, in addition to remediating them. We bought Cider for their innovation, which will help give Prisma Cloud this capability that anyone doing cloud operations has to have.«.

Guy Fletcher, CEO of Cider Securityhas highlighted that they designed «an app security platform that keeps engineering moving fast without compromising security. It’s a perfect fit to join Palo Alto Networks, a company built on the foundation of several security principles. By scanning and securing the integration and distribution channel we can help identify where there may be vulnerabilities in your code. Prisma Cloud will now be the leading code-to-cloud security solution«.

Prisma cloud is a cloud-native application protection platform from Palo Alto Networks. One year ago, Prisma Cloud launched Cloud Code Security, which has become one of the fastest adopting Prisma Cloud modules. This was followed last September by the launch of SCA, a context-aware solution. With Cider, Palo Alto Networks extends the reach of Prisma by unifying cloud and application security.
