SK Hynix starts manufacturing 24GB capacity LPDDR5X memory

LPDDR5X memory is a standard essential for the most powerful mobile devicesand also for various low-power solutions, such as mini PCs and convertibles where very contained form factors and very compact designs are used.

SK Hynix is one of the most important manufacturers of this type of memory, and today it has confirmed a significant leap with the start of mass production of a version with a capacity of 24 GB. By this I mean that what is new is not the production of LPDDR5X memory, in fact it entered the mass production phase at the end of 2022, but the jump to a capacity of 24 GB.

As many of our readers will know, right now most high-end smartphones use between 8 and 12 GB of RAM. Some models can be bought with 16GB RAM configurations, but we’ve already started to see the release of certain terminals that come with up to 24 GB of RAM.

Fitting that huge amount of memory into a smartphone is something that, frankly, does not make sense, since it will not be used properly. With this in mind, a priori it might seem to us that SK Hynix has not made the right decision, but we must take into account two very important things that will show us that it has actually followed the right path.

LPDDR5T

The first is that this memory configuration has a great commercial pull and a great impact at the marketing level, especially since consumers tend to think that more is always better, and that a smartphone with 24 GB of RAM will be a new ” milestone” in history and that will offer a higher level of performance. In other words, there is going to be a significant demand for 24GB LPDDR5X chipsand this interests SK Hynix.

On the other hand, it must be taken into account that this memory configuration can also be integrated into other types of compact, ultra-light and low-power equipment, as I said before, so its usefulness is not limited to smartphones. For example, we could see ARM convertibles with a Snapdragon and 24GB of LPDDR5X.

This new LPDDR5X memory works at a voltage between 1.01 and 1.12 volts and can reach a maximum bandwidth of 68GB/s. SK Hynix has also announced the LPDDR5T memory, which is capable of working at a speed of up to 9,600 MHza figure that is 13% higher than the previous standard.
