In October 2021, Counterpoint already warned us: smartphone sales will collapse in the coming months due to the shortage of chips. Today, these predictions are coming true. According to a new report from Canalys, the smartphone market is down 11% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the previous year. Despite the many efforts of manufacturers, it seems very complicated to meet demand given the current situation.

At least for most of them, because some manage to get by despite a tumultuous context. Samsung, in particular, retains its position as world leader, which was already attributed to it at the start of the year. Thus, compared to the beginning of 2021, the firm’s market share has fallen from 22% to 24%. This is followed by Apple, which enjoys a nice growth of 3%, in fact increasing its market share from 15% to 18%.

Apple and Samsung dominate a struggling smartphone market

According to Canalys, this growth is due, among other things, to the constant success of the iPhone 13 since its release. The iPhone SE would also go a long way in keeping up the pace for Apple. As expected, the two rivals Samsung and Apple can therefore count on the big sales of their 5G smartphones to succeed where other manufacturers fail.

In addition to the shortage of components, Canalys says that user enthusiasm for smartphones is less strong than before.
