Tensor G5, the first SoC customized by Google for smartphones

Tensor G5 will be the first SoC for smartphones fully customized by Google. It will arrive in 2025 and will replace Samsung as it will be made by the TSMC foundrie.

Apple has led the way for the rest of the industry by exploiting the benefits of custom hardware and software design under one roof. In iPhone mobiles or iPad tablets for many years and more recently in Mac personal computers. Samsung has done the same with Exynos (although it has been combining them with Qualcomm developments) or Huawei (without much success) with Kirin chips .

Google has also developed its own chips for mobiles, the ‘Sensor’ series released on the Pixel 6 and which replaced the Qualcomm SoCs that it was using until then. The Tensor G5 model will take a strategic leap since it will be the first completely customized by Google, as he explains The Information.

It should be clarified that the Tensors so far include semi-custom components based on existing Samsung designs with some additional features like Google NPUs (Neural Processing Units) to improve AI performance.

That will be the main novelty of the Tensor G5, replacing Samsung components with Google’s own. In addition, the manufacturer of the chip itself will also change and TSMC (the world’s leading foundrie) will be in charge of production in advanced technological processes in 3nm, which promises greater energy efficiency. The objective is clear, to integrate software and hardware, reducing dependency on external technologies for which it is the main engine of any mobile device.

Tensioner G5

No technical details are known, but we can expect an increase in computing power, lower consumption and reinforcement of photo and video processing capabilities with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and deep learning. And all this reinforced by softwaresomething Google has done successfully in the past when Pixel phones, without the most advanced camera sensors, took the best pictures.

Google will move away with Tensor G5 from the dependence on Samsung (its main ally in Android) in the design of chips, although it must be said that like the rest of the industry (Apple included) they will continue to be based on ARM licenses .
