Tesla wants to push customers to give up free lifetime charging

Many Tesla Model S and Model X owners still enjoy free lifetime charging on Superchargers today. A thorn in Tesla’s side. The manufacturer has launched a new offer to convince these users to give up this advantage.

During the first years of the Model S and Model X, Tesla offered a non-negligible bonus to attract consumers. If purchasing a Model S/X, the buyer could benefit from the free and lifetime recharge.

Of course, this considerable advantage was only valid at the brand’s Supercharger stations, and not at home. Only, Tesla ended this promotional operation in 2018, arguing that she could no longer afford it. Despite everything, the American company relaunched this gratuity a few times thereafter, notably in 2019 and then in February 2022 during the winter holidays.

Note that even today, a few thousand Tesla Model X and Model S owners still enjoy this advantage. And for Tesla, that’s a problem. Earlier this year, the brand offered these privileged users a $5,000 discount on the purchase of their new Tesla, provided they trade in their Model S/X with free lifetime charging.

And on this Monday, April 24, 2023, the American company is launching a new seduction operation for encourage drivers to give up their advantage. Called “Ownership Loyalty Benefit”, it allows users to benefit from six years of unlimited recharge with the purchase of a latest-generation Model S or Model X.

Tesla wants to get rid of old Model S/X with free lifetime charging

With this promotion, the objective is clear: get rid of the last customers who still take advantage of the free lifetime recharge. “Current Tesla Model S or Model X owners with active unlimited free charging are eligible for six years of unlimited charging. To qualify, owners must trade in or forfeit unlimited vehicle charging and take delivery of a new Model S or Model X by June 30, 2023.” writes Tesla.

In our view, this remains an interesting offer. Admittedly, you lose access to free and unlimited charging, but in return, you leave with a recent Model S/X that is much more efficient than the first versions, while benefiting from free Supercharging for six years.

Anyway, this new operation proves once again that Tesla is determined to cut back on the advantages offered to its customers until then. In April 2022, for example, the brand withdrew the mobile charger that has always been included with its cars. And in the summer of 2022, Tesla went a step further by ending free lifetime GPS functionality.
