You’ll find the game of Roulette across the continent, each with different variations – there’s even a European version!
Roulette means ‘little wheel’ in French, which makes sense as it is played with a wheel, along with a ball and a large felt table. The table is printed with words and numbers, where players will place their bets.
The most common variation is European Roulette, which has 37 numbers on it, in comparison to American Roulette which has 38 (with a double zero).

Now, this is a casino game that you may have never heard of, but it is a fast-paced dice game that is popular in Portugal.
It’s played with three dice and three possible bets: big, small and aces.
- Big – where the sum of three dice is 14, 15, or 16.
- Small – five, six, or seven.
- Aces – the sum equals three – one dot per dice.
With this game, the dealer will quickly continue to roll the dice until one of these results is reached. If you bet on big or small, you gain an even money sum and if aces come up, all players lose who hadn’t bet on aces.
Kalooki
This card game is played around the world, especially in Europe. There are different variations of the game, so be aware of that before you sit down for a game.
Between two to five players can begin a game, set with two full decks of cards, including the two jokers. With so many cards, there are several rounds, with the aim of disposing all cards. This is done by placing cards into grouped and sequenced sets. For example, cards that are in the same house.
Once you have a group where the card values equal 40, then they can be placed face up on the table. On every turn, pick up a card from the upside-down deck, while discarding one you already own. The next player may pick up the card that is discarded, but only to add it to a set of cards they have.
If you’re able to dispose all within a round, the other players are given penalty points based on what cards they have left. You don’t want to be left with the joker as they are worth the most points (15), so get discarding!
