The European Union and United States have reached a agreement to accelerate and promote the use of Artificial Intelligence to improve and advance different sectors. Among them, according to Reuters, are agriculture, healthcare, emergency response, weather and climate forecasting, and the power grid. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence modeling, which refers to machine learning algorithms that use data for logical decision making, can be used to improve the speed and efficiency of government operations and services.
This is the first far-reaching agreement on Artificial Intelligence between the two regions. Until now, the agreements that had been signed between the two were limited to its use to improve specific and determined areas, such as privacy. For now, the agreement is only signed by the United States and the European Commission, but according to US sources, other countries will be invited to join in the coming months.
According to a senior US official, one of the highlights of this deal is “develop joint models leaving the data where it is. The data from the United States stays in its territory, while the data from the European Union stays in its territory, but we can develop a model that “talks” with the European data and the American data, because the more data there is, and the more diverse whatever, the model will be better«.
The initiative will give governments greater access to more detailed and data-rich AI models. This will lead to greater efficiency, for example, in sectors such as power grid management and emergency response, among other benefits.
Specifically, in relation to the application of Artificial Intelligence to improve the electrical grid, the United States collects data on how electricity is used, where it is generated, and how the grid is load balanced so that weather changes don’t make it fall. It is not the only country that has them. Many countries in Europe collect similar data from their own networks. Well, under this new deal, all these data will be analyzed using a common Artificial Intelligence model.
It will be done in order to achieve better results for those in charge of managing emergencies in the network, as well as so that their operators and other entities related to energy networks can use Artificial Intelligence to improve systems.
