The number of Spanish SMEs grows a timid 0.07%, in the month of May

The General Directorate for Industry and SMEs has just published the report “SME Figures”, with information on small and medium-sized companies in the country. Thus, according to these sources, the total number of SMEs in Spain, in the month of May 2023, amounts to 2,930,969, The number of large companies (250 or more employees) being 5,516 (0.19% of the total), which means a total of 2,936,485.

Compared to the previous month, SMEs have grown by 0.07% (14,354 more companies) while large ones have experienced greater growth, reaching 0.36% (295 more companies).

On the other hand, the number of SMEs with employeesin May, is 1,331,015, which, together with the 5,516 large companies, gives a total result of 1,336,531 companies with employees, with a monthly variation of 0.16% and 2,123 more companies.

With respect to employment, SMEs with workers hired 9,530,268 people in May, representing an increase of 0.25% (24,099 employees). With respect to large companies, these increased employability by 0.24%, which means 15,256 more employees.

Small and medium-sized companies with between 10 and 49 employees experienced the highest growth, both in the number of companies (0.58%) and in terms of employment (0.68%).

The data related to companies with employees are taken from the monthly statistics of businesses registered with Social Security, updated as of May 31, 2023. Regarding SMEs without employees, the latest data available on the date of preparation of this report They refer to the self-employed registered in the first quarter of 2023 and reflect a decrease of 9,224 (-0.57%) compared to the data for the fourth quarter of 2022.
