The Radeon RX 7900 XTX performs significantly less than the Radeon RX 6800 XT in 3DMark Mesh Shaders

We have been commenting for a few days that the launch of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX has been controversial, not only because the expectations generated have not been met, but also because more and more voices are talking about architecture level issues which could not be resolved by pulling drivers.

AMD came out saying that everything is fine and that these problems do not exist because they affect “experimental functions”, but today we have new information that totally contradicts AMD and that indicates that there is definitely something wrong.

3DCenter has been able to confirm with its own tests that the implementation of mesh shaders in the Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX He has problemssince as we can see in the attached graph, both graphics cards perform less than half that of a Radeon RX 6800 XT in 3DMark Mesh Shader.

Mesh Shaders Radeon RX 7900 XTX

there seems to be something is wrong with the new generation of AMD graphics, and it is no coincidence that there are no custom Radeon RX 7900 XT or Radeon RX 7900 XTX from GIGABYTE, MSI and ASUS level assemblers still in stores. MSI confirmed that it will launch its custom models in the first quarter of 2023, a date quite far from the launch of the reference models, and something that only reinforces what I have told you before.

Perhaps these assemblers have preferred to wait for AMD to have more mature Navi 31 graphics cores available than the current ones, which are based on the A0 revision, although this issue is involved in some controversy because, according to various sources, AMD has used said revision in other graphics solutions, such as the Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000, and not indicative of an “early” or “unfinished” chip.

We will see how all this controversy evolves, and what happens when the personalized models of the different assemblers reach the market. It will be interesing see which Navi 31 graphics core revision they useY repeat tests again focused on assessing not only the operation of meshed shaders, but also others that delve into issues that have been controversial, such as the management of energy profiles.

All in all, I want to point out that the Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX swith competitive products, especially in raster, and it must be recognized that AMD has been able to improve a lot in ray tracing. Let’s see if they surprise us soon with an FSR3 supported by artificial intelligence that is at the DLSS level.
