Elon Musk continues with the intention of making Twitter profitable at all costs and for this he will get money even from under stones if necessary. His latest measure in this regard, making payment one of the security measures of the service to protect user accounts.
We’re talking about double authentication, two-step verification… It doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s the same thing. In Twitter Spain it is called two-factor authentication and it works just as you imagine: activating a second layer of security to verify that whoever logs in is who they say they are.
Thus, after entering the username and password, if two-factor authentication is activated, the user will be asked to take that second step to identify themselves. And that second step can be taken in three ways: with a text message, using an authentication app or a security key.
Well, all those users who trusted the SMS to log in to Twitter have until next March 19, 2023 to deactivate this option, or subscribe to Twitter Blue, the payment plan of the social network to continue enjoying this feature.
Of course, controversy has erupted around this new measure, but the truth is that it is not particularly negative. What’s more, of the three ways that Twitter allows to apply two-factor authentication, that of text messages is the least recommended security levelas experts have been warning for years.
And it is not the most accessible either: although only the most fearful and cautious walk around with a security key -a physical device- in their pocket, Much more secure than receiving an SMS on your mobile and just as convenient is using an authentication app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, to give two well-known examples.
In short, if you’re using Twitter SMS two-factor authentication and aren’t willing to jump through Twitter Blue hoops, you’re already headed for the service preferences to make the change. You will appreciate it in more ways than one.
