Decidedly, the year begins badly for the ID. 4 from Volkswagen. After a first recall of 1,000 copies for a fire risk in early January 2023, the German brand has just confirmed another recall, on a much larger scale this time. (www.coloradoriveradventures.com)

Indeed, the manufacturer has launched a recall for more than 21,000 IDs. 4. The reason? The presence of a bug in electric SUV high-voltage battery management software. As VW points out, this issue can cause the software to reset under certain conditions. Result, this may disable the high voltage pulse generatorand as part of the chain reaction, interrupt the power supply to the electric motor.

A bug that does not date from yesterday

A similar problem affected more than 14,000 electric BMWs in January 2023. Here too, the German brand had no choice but to carry out a massive recall. According to documentation provided by NHTSA, the American federal agency in charge of road safety, this recall concerns exclusively 20 904 ID. 4 manufactured between May 26, 2020 and January 20, 2022.

Note that this issue was first spotted in July 2021. In September, VW assured in a press release that this failure did not endanger drivers, because “the steering and braking functions are not affected”.

Despite this optimistic statement, Volkswagen had not closed its investigation so far, and in January 2022, one of the manufacturer’s suppliers came forward to alert users to this software problem. However, there is good news since newer vehicles are not affectedsince they use a more recent version of the famous software.

As for the owners unfortunately concerned, they will receive in the coming days an invitation to go to a dealership to install a patch for management software. As a reminder, Volkswagen has stopped delivering its IDs. 4 with heat pumps because of the shortage of semiconductors.
