VPN and bank accounts: when you could have problems

Having a VPN is a good idea to improve security in many cases. For example, if you are going to connect to a public Wi-Fi network, it is a good idea to prevent intruders from accessing your personal information. The problem is that, sometimes, we may have difficulties accessing certain services. This is what happens with the online bank accounts. We are going to tell you why you might sometimes have problems opening your bank’s app if you connect through a Mobile VPN.

But what exactly is a VPN? It is an application that encrypt the connectionhide the IP adress and it is as if you were browsing from another place. For example, if you are in Spain but you connect to a VPN hosted in Japan, from the pages you visit and the applications you use it is as if you were in the Japanese country.

Some apps do not go with VPN

There are certain apps that don’t work when you connect to a VPN, at least if you’re connected to a server in another country. This happens with some banking applications and the reason is none other than security. The bank’s intention is to prevent account theft and if it detects that you connect from another IP very far from your country, it could block it for security reasons.

This is something that I have been able to verify and it occurs both with large banks, as well as with other less well-known and secondary ones. Especially, this is something that happens, at least in Spanish banks, when an IP address from outside the European Union is used. Directly the app stops working and you can’t log in.

Therefore, if you are going to use a VPN and you want to enter your Bank account, keep in mind that you may have problems. Maybe your bank blocks that connection and you find yourself in a situation where you can’t send a bank transfer, check your balance or perform whatever task you need.

As we say, the reason is the security. It is something similar to what can sometimes happen when you suddenly use your bank card in another country. That could trigger the bank’s alarms and block the transaction. A problem for people who really are the owners of that card and are simply traveling.

But beware, it is not something that happens only with banking applications. You can also see this in different programs, also for security or for having certain restrictions. An example is applications to view streaming content, social networks, programs that do not appear on Google Play in certain countries, etc.

Use a VPN with many servers

Ideally, to avoid having problems when using a VPN and entering the bank, is to use a program with many servers. If you see that you have problems, all you have to do is connect to a server in Spain. In that case, the bank will not notice anything strange and will allow the connection without problems.

That Guaranteed VPN you can use? You will find many, but we recommend some like Surfshark or NordVPN. They have many servers, they work well and they are guaranteed. Avoid using programs that may be insecure, without good ratings and that may put your data at risk without you knowing it.

As you can see, using a VPN can free you from having security problems on public networks or being able to enter geographically blocked services. However, sometimes you may have trouble getting into the bank account. To avoid this, it is important to use a service that has many servers.
