Waterworld: a sequel TV series in development

We will probably never see it realized Waterworld 2, but one sequel series of the 90s film with Kevin Costner Yup.

26 years after the arrival in the cinemas of the post-apocalyptic world, submerged by the oceans, in which a changed and young (40 years old, to be precise) Kevin Costner was plowing the waves with a catamaran, Collider has revealed the arrival of a sequel series.

A Waterworld sequel series is on the way

This will be set 20 years after the events of the original film and, according to the magazine, Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Boys, will be behind the camera of the show.

“We’re not 100% sure about the approach we’ll have to the show” he said John Fox which, together with John Davis, is producing the series, “But surely, we are in its construction phases right now”.

Davis also produced the original film directed by Kevin Reynolds, which famously cost $ 180 million in 1995, the most expensive film ever at the time, but only grossed 80 million nationally.

The series will be made by Universal Television and, according to what has been revealed, is very close to being bought by a video on demand service (although Fox and Davis have not expressly confirmed this).

No other name other than Trachtenberg is currently connected to the series, but things have already started and in the works. “Dan is in, we’re exploring the story now and we’re talking to a few different writers. And we should have a writer connected to the project, I think, in the next two weeks “Fox continued.

For those who missed the 1995 cult film, Waterworld tells the story of a future in which the polar ice caps have melted, covering the whole Earth under water. The main character is a mutated human with gills (played by Costner) who reluctantly joins a woman and a girl (Jeannie Tripplehorn And Tina Majorino) because the latter may have a map for the mainland tattooed on its back – a map that everyone on the planet wants.

The series would keep that film in canon and pick up on the story by providing it with an official sequel. “We will do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie”Davis said. “Twenty years later. All those people, 20 years later “. It’s unclear if Costner will return to his role but, even if it were just for a cameo, I’m sure fans would appreciate it.
