Winamp returns, and already has a confirmed date, what surprises await us?

In 2013, one of the best music players that existed at that time left us: Winamp. The rise of streaming, and not knowing how to adapt to the new way of consuming music made Nullsoft and AOL abandon the development of the program 10 years ago, and the web stopped being available 5 years later. And we had almost forgotten about this big one. However, Radionomy Group got hold of the rights to the program, and after long development, it’s finally coming back to your PC.

Winamp was undoubtedly one of the best music players in the 1990s. This program was developed and released in 1997 by Nullsoft, a company founded in the same year. Over time, Winamp became the quintessential audio player, mainly due to its customizable user interface, its ability to play a wide variety of audio formats, and its support for plugins and skins.

However, at the end of the first decade of the 2000s, music began to move towards the cloud, and Winamp, unable to adapt to the new times, began to lose ground. In 2013, AOL, which had absorbed Nullsoft in 1999, shut down the project. And while there have been several attempts to revive the player, none have succeeded in regaining its past popularity. Until today.

Radionomy Group wanted Winamp to be as complete a program as possible, covering the needs of all users who listen to any type of audio on the PC, be it streaming services, podcasts, radio stations, audiobooks and, why not? no, music downloaded in MP3.

Although we still cannot know in detail what this program will be like, the developers have shared on Twitter some of the main functions and features of this new program. And these are:

“My Creators” page, thanks to which we can update you on our favorite creators and their latest publications.
Several subscription levels for authors, being able to choose how much we want to pay content creators and in which group of users to be.
Discography. It allows us to know all the albums that an artist has released.
Album. We can listen to the album we want from any artist.
Fanzone Home. A new section to discover, and support, new artists.

Although we still have a lot to learn about this program, we have a bittersweet first opinion. It is certainly a modern player, designed for modern times. But the micro-patronage model for artists, in the iVoox style, does not convince us. We hope we’re wrong, but it’s going to be in no man’s land between AIMP for MP3, Spotify for streaming, and iVoox for podcasts. When it arrives, we hope to find some surprise.

And when will this new program arrive? Here we have good news, and it is that we are not going to have to wait long to be able to test all the features of this system. Without going any further, the launch of the new program will be on April 13, that is, tomorrow. We don’t know the time (we estimate around afternoon), but what is clear is that we already have it marked on the calendar.
