The purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk has become a real hell for the board, and also for a good part of its workers, since the billionaire announced that he was going to launch a campaign of massive layoffs and change for full board of directors. Altogether, Musk has in mind lay off 50% of the workforcealthough initially his intention was to reach 75%.
With this movement Elon Musk wants to reduce operating costs, a movement that we imagine he will have studied in terms of viability, both professional and functional and legal. The fact is that the affected workers have not stayed to see them come, and we can confirm that the workers, and some recent ex-workers, of Twitter affected by that campaign of massive dismissals They have decided to sue the company.
According to the lawsuit, the mass layoffs violate the US Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, a law that requires companies with more than 100 workers to issue advance notice of 60 days when 50 or more employees are to be laid off. In this case, that law must be applied fully, and it is clear that Elon Musk has not complied with it.
Twitter has commented that the layoffs are “unfortunately necessary to ensure the success of the company and its advancement.” To successfully face this huge layoff campaign, the company has confirmed that the offices will be temporarily closed, and that the access cards will be completely suspended to guarantee the security of each employee, and also to protect the data and systems of Twitter and its customers.
The lawsuit asks that Twitter comply with the WARN, that is, to give those two months notice before starting the layoffs, and to stop forcing certain workers to sign documents waiving legal action against the company. There is no doubt that Elon Musk has entered through the front door, but he has done it in the worst possible way, like an elephant in a china shop.
What purely personal opinion It’s hard for me to decide with whom I empathize more and for whom I feel more sorry, if for those who have lost their jobs or for those who keep it, but who will have to be under the orders of Elon Musk and put up with “his things”.
