The ANFR, the national frequency agency, has multiple prerogatives. In particular, it is responsible for supervising specific absorption rates of radio equipment (which include smartphones) available in the market.

The institution regularly calls manufacturers to order when the SAR values measured exceed the requirements set by the European Union. In July 2021, the ANFR pinned 9 OnePlus, Sony and Xiaomi smartphones, while it was Samsung’s turn to be singled out by the ANFR in July 2022.

Xiaomi and Logicom sanctioned by the ANFR for too high SARs

As the agency explains in an official press release published on March 1, 2023, it recently checked the SARs on the Xiaomi Poco X3 and Logicom’s Swipe. These measurements were carried out at an accredited laboratory. As a reminder, European standards impose regulatory limit values of 4W/kg for the “member” DAS And 2W/kg for the “trunk” SARwhile the “head” SAR is set at 2W/kg for 10 grams of human tissue.

However, the ANFR found much higher SARs on Xiaomi’s Poco X3 and Logicom Le Swipe analyzed during its first examinations:

  • 2.33W/kg in “trunk” SAR for the Poco X3
  • 2.07W/kg in “trunk” SAR for the Logicom Le Swipe
  • 3.25W/kg in “member” SAR for the Logicom Le Swipe

After a first warning, both manufacturers have rolled out a software update in order to reduce the power of the terminals concerned. Only, the ANFR noted at even higher SARs after the patch releaseat Xiaomi in any case.

After the update, the Poco X3 displayed 2.67W/kg in “trunk” SAR and 5.49W in “limb” SAR! As a result, the two manufacturers were forced to develop and deploy a second software update. This time, Xiaomi and Logicom are in the nails. Despite everything, the ANFR decided to sanction these repeated breaches by inflicting an administrative fine of €7,500 to the two companies concerned.

ANFR invites owners of these smartphones to check that they have been updated automatically. If not, a manual update is highly recommended.
