AMD and Samsung work on a GPU optimized for Exynos

Many left the Exynos platform for dead when Samsung opted for Qualcomm SoCs for its flagship, the Galaxy S23. This was an intelligent decision, since the brand’s engineers did not finish touching the right key, so they chose to guarantee their flagship in the smartphone market, even if it was at the cost of partially sacrificing the image of their platform. of integrated. In any case, and to mark differences with the rest, it is true that both companies, Qualcomm and Samsung, worked to create a personalized version.

A step back can be the beginning of a withdrawal, yes, but also a tactical move to gain momentum, and shortly after that announcement it began to become clear to us that in this case we were not facing a surrender. As the first examples of this, in February Samsung presented the Exynos 1330 and 1380, two integrated ones aimed at the mid-range market, in which Samsung chips have a good prestige, but also that engineers were working on a future Exynos 2400with which the multinational continued to aim at the high-end.

Commercial and technological partners are essential in a market as competitive as that of consumer technology. Signing collaborations with technology companies that can contribute their knowledge in very specific areas usually translates into a notable improvement in the final result. Thus, when it was confirmed last week that AMD and Samsung will maintain their collaboration for the design of the graphic section of the South Korean SoC, it became clear that Samsung continues to want to stand up to Qualcomm’s top of the range.

AMD and Samsung work on a GPU optimized for Exynos

Everything indicates that the future Galaxy S24 will once again have a Qualcomm SoC, but the future of the S25 is no longer so clear, especially after what we can read in GSM Arena, where they state that AMD and Samsung are working on GPU optimization for a future top-of-the-line Exynos, probably the Exynos 2500. If this point is confirmed, and it seems quite likely after last week’s announcement, we can assume that Samsung intends to use its own integrated ones in the Galaxy S25 again.

The collaboration will focus on bringing RDNA 3 to Samsung chipsfor which AMD will provide this technology and Samsung will focus on efficiency, sacrificing as little performance as possible, but in order to guarantee that the GPU adapts to both the thermal and consumption requirements of smartphones, although are top of the range.

It will still take a while to know what plans Samsung has for Exynos in terms of its Galaxy family beyond the S24, but it seems increasingly clear that the hypothetical Exynos 2500 could mean the return. Whether it is through the front door will be determined by the ability of its engineers to avoid repeating the mistakes of the Exynos 2200.
