Dell Alienware makes the leap to 480 hertz on a laptop

Dell’s Alienware family of computers It is one of the oldest in the market.. It is not in vain that we speak of a brand born in 1996, and which was acquired by Dell 10 years later, in 2006. Thus, we speak of more than a quarter of a century of experience assembling systems that, practically from the beginning, have been oriented mainly to the world of gaming, long before it was defined in this way.

Thus, we are talking about a brand that not only has tradition, but also the prestige of having been the spearhead of the sector and, even today, for continuing to be innovative. This is something that we can witness again with the announcement of its latest laptops, lOS Alienware m17 R5 and Alienware x17 R2scoring as the first laptops to offer the option of a panel with a frefresh rate up to 480 hertz in its top-of-the-line configuration. Surely we will soon see more similar proposals on the market, yes, but Dell has managed to be the first.

These are the available display options:

  • 17.3 inches, 1,920 x 1,080 dots, 480 hertz, 3 milliseconds.
  • 17.3 inches, 1,920 x 1,080 points, 165 hertz, 3 milliseconds.
  • 17.3 inches, 1,920 x 1,080 dots, 360 hertz, 1 millisecond.
  • 17.3 inches, 3,840 x 2,160 points, 120 hertz, 3 milliseconds.

Obviously, as you would expect with displays of this type, Dell has announced that they are compatible with the technologies AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Syncas well as with DolbyVisionwhich makes them not only a great option for gaming, but also for the consumption of audiovisual content.

By models, the Alienware m17 R5 is based on processors up to AMD Ryzen 9 6900HXaccompanied by graphics NVIDIA RTX 3080Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT, up to 64 gigs of DDR5 RAM and features two M.2 slots for up to 4 terabytes of PCIe NVMe storage. To power the beast, it mounts batteries up to 97 watt hours and has a power supply of up to 240 watts.

For its part, the Alienware x17 R2 is based on a processor up to Intel Core i9-12900HK and graphics up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. You can mount up to 64 gigabytes of 4,800 megahertz DDR5 RAM and up to four terabytes of storage via its two M.2 slots. It is powered by an 87 watt hour battery and this in turn is powered by a powerful power supply of no less than 33 watts.

Whenever I see computers with these characteristics, I usually think of the still widespread belief that laptops are not a good option for gaming. It is true that a high-end desktop can offer better performance than a laptop, but it is also true that with the performance offered by these machines, stating that they are not good for playing is an error flavored with hindrances from the past.
