Do you remember EarPods? Older iPhone veterans will remember that Apple included these headphones in iPhone boxes until not long ago. In 2018, they were still included in some models, until they decided to stop doing it and, if you wanted one, you had to buy them separately. But in 2023, are they worth it? In this post we are going to review it.
Do not confuse EarPods with AirPods
Perhaps if you have recently arrived at the Apple ecosystem, you wonder what it is about. EarPods? Not the AirPods? The truth is that, although their names may be thousands of thousands, EarPods and AirPods do not have much to do with each other, despite the fact that both are Apple headphones.
EarPods were, at the time, the headphones that every iPhone and iPod Touch user I could enjoy just buying the product. These headphones, while still being sold to this day, were first introduced in 2012, when the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th made their debut. We are talking, then, about headphones that are already more than ten years old.
These, yes, were not wireless. But they were connected by cable. And it was in those years, when Apple had not yet impressed us with its AirPods, when the first iPhone without a Jack connector was launched, and the “I can’t listen to music and charge the phone at the same time” melon opened up. Because, things as they are: although the discomfort existed at that time, time has proved Apple right, since wired headphones are no longer, not even remotely, as common today as they were back then.
But, leaving this issue aside, EarPods were only available in one version: with a headphone jack. Until the iPhone 7 arrived, and Apple released a second version with the Lightning connector. Both are still sold in the official Apple Store, and both have the same price of 19 euros.
If we look at its aesthetic form, we will see that they are quite similar to the first generation AirPods or AirPods 2, in terms of the shape of the earphone. For the rest, what do these headphones have? They are very simple: the necessary cable for them to work, a remote control and the connector, which can be Lightning or mini Jacksince both are equal.
The remote control is used to turn the volume up and down, stop or resume music playback, and also includes a small microphone so you can talk on the phone or FaceTime with headphones on. And as for the sound? Do they stand out for something special? Well, the truth is that these are the most normal headphones. Don’t expect any motion-tracking technology to tailor audio, and don’t expect much with Dolby Atmos (to say nothing) or lossless audio resolution, either. So, for 19 euros, perhaps today, we even get to pay a somewhat expensive pricewhich is why it offers us this product, regardless of the connector.
