Electric cars break down much more often than thermal ones

JD Power’s latest report is quite edifying. Indeed, it is clear that electric cars have many more technical problems than their thermal counterparts. In question, a much higher number of electronic accessories, necessarily much more likely to break down.

Although electric cars are conquering the automotive market a little more each day, the fact remains that their technologies are not always up to date. This is the obvious conclusion of a new report published by JD Power, which compiles its annual ranking of the most reliable car manufacturers. The least we can say is that Tesla and his companions are very far from the podium.

The latter, precisely, is fully occupied by Stellantis and its subsidiaries. No Peugeot or Citroën, however, but rather Dodge, RAM and Alpha Romeo in that order. The rest of the ranking presents the vast majority of manufacturers who have not yet unveiled electric models. So what about these? For the most part, they are found rather at the bottom of the list.

Electric cars are less reliable than thermal models

First of all, it should be noted that here, the term “reliability” takes into account technical problems, whether electronic or mechanical, as well as the various manufacturing and aesthetic problems of the car when it leaves the factory. This therefore explains the very poor scores of manufacturers who devote themselves solely to electricity. Indeed, they often choose electronic accessories that replace formerly mechanical versions.

We are of course thinking of the various driving aids, but also, in a more unusual way, of the door handles which receive a good number of reports from drivers. Another black spot: phone chargers, which lead to overheating problems – when they are simply working. Tesla is thus one of the very poor students, with a score of 257 PP100 (problems per 100 vehicles), while Dodge has a score of 140 PP100.

The firm of Elon Musk is however not last: behind it are Polestar (313 PP100) and Lucid (340 PP100). Results to consider when buying your next vehicle.
