Firefox 114 improves the use of DNS over HTTPS, bookmarks and extensions

Firefox 114 It has been published as the new major version of Mozilla’s web browser, which this time introduces greater flexibility in managing DNS over HTTPS and other improvements aimed at making the application easier to use.

The first thing that the foundation of Firefox 114 has highlighted is the incorporation of a user interface that allows handling an exception list for DNS over HTTPS (DoH)the feature that is dedicated to sending DNS requests as standard HTTPS traffic to DoH-compliant DNS servers such as those of Cloudflare and NextDNS, although the user can set another of their preference.

When DoH is enabled, Firefox takes care of encrypting DNS queries and responses, sending them over HTTPS instead of directly over UDP. This ensures that attackers cannot spoof or spoof DNS traffic. The traffic generated through DoH has similarities with the rest of the HTTPS traffic.

Continuing with more things related to DNS over HTTPS, its settings are now part of the “Privacy & Security” section within the Settings so that the user has a more intuitive access to all the possibilities offered through the feature.

Another very important novelty of Mozilla Firefox 114 is the possibility of search bookmarks from an item present in the corresponding menu, which is accessible by adding the bookmarks menu button to the toolbar. As of this release it is possible to restrict searches in the local browsing history by selecting “Searching history” from the history, library or application menu buttons.

To end the skins that have reached at least all users of desktop builds, it is now possible reorder the extensions listed in the extensions panel and the contents recommended by Pocket can be seen from France, Italy and Spain.

Windows 7, Linux, and macOS users have the ability to use USB FIDO 2/WebAuthn authenticators. Here it is important to note that some advanced features like passwordless login require you to set a PIN on the authenticator. On the other hand, macOS users can capture videos with their cameras using all supported resolutions, thus overcoming the present limitation of 1,280×720 pixels.

Moving away from the end user parts, an interesting detail of Firefox 114 is the syntax support supports() for the rules of @import in CSS level 4, which allows “the importation of other style sheets based on the support dependency. Also, the Inspector panel now accurately displays the conditions on top of the imported rule.”

Details about Mozilla Firefox 114 are available in the release notes, while the app can be obtained for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the corresponding download section. If you have it installed, your update can be forced by following the path Main Menu > Help > “About Firefox”, although in the case of Linux the logical thing to do is to wait for it to arrive through the repositories of the distribution, Snap and/or Flathub (Flatpack). In Android, his thing is that it is supplied through the Google Play Store.
