ChatGPT has the potential to “destroy” Google in a year or two at the mostsays the creator of Gmail in a tweet which is giving rise to much debate. Paul Buccheit believes that this botchat will kill Google’s most lucrative product, its search engine. Furthermore, even if the internet giant somehow caught up with artificial intelligence, “You couldn’t fully implement it without destroying the most valuable parts of your business”.
ChatGPT is the chatbot that has been in fashion since it hit the general public last November. You already know it. It’s basically a prototype chatbot that uses AI to understand and then respond to text. The real kicker, though, is that it’s designed for natural conversation, a section long considered Google’s forte.
Internet gossips say that the enormous popularity that this conversational bot is reaching has sounded the alarms in the Mountain View barracks. And let’s not forget that Microsoft will invest a million dollars in the company behind this development, OpenAI. CEO Sundar Pichai has issued a “code red” for development teams to speed up AI projects at Google.
The New York Times recently reported that Google plans to “showcase the capabilities of its search engine with chatbot features this year” and is developing more than 20 artificial intelligence products to apparently counter ChatGPT. More details are expected to be revealed during the upcoming Google I/O 2023 developer conference.
The problem is serious. “Google may be just one or two years of total disruption. The AI will remove the search engine results page, which is where they make most of their revenue.”describes the creator of Gmail, adding that “even if they catch up with AI, they can’t fully implement it without destroying the most valuable part of their business”.
We’ll see what happens. ChatGPT is currently available for free. Although a paid Pro version is already underway, they are still interested in keeping as many users as possible because the natural language processing model is still in its “learning” phase and each interaction adds to improve the neural network on which it works and which is believed to be the largest known with 175 billion parameters. Even with many flaws, ChatGPT continues and will continue to become more and more intelligent with its use since it uses reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF).
Its scope is really unknownbut the forcefulness of someone like the creator of Gmail is to take it into account.
