Gaming monitor sales fall in 2022, but will recover in 2023

We are in a complicated hardware market, with some components very expensive and others falling in price. Now we know the situation of the data display screens market, which also fell significantly in sales. According to TrendForce, the sale of gaming monitors in 2023 has registered a drop of about 13%.

This situation of falling component sales is obvious and has to do directly with COVID-19. During that period, many new systems were sold, all driven by teleworking and distance training. A scenario that generated a need that no longer exists and in which the forced renewal process has already been completed.

Collapse (also) in the sale of gaming monitors

As a first piece of information, indicate that the sale of this peripheral has suffered the first drop since 2016. According to the report, 19.8 million gaming monitors have been sold in 2022, a 13% drop compared to the previous year. Of course, this situation will be reversed this year, according to the data revealed in the report.

TrendForce has indicated that by 2023 a distribution of 20.8 million units is expected. It supposes a recovery of this market of 5%. Note that the report highlights three factors of recovery:

  • manufacturers are replacing its models with refresh rates of 75 Hz per models above 100 Hz
  • For the third quarter of 2023, the Hangzhou Asian Games and this would mean increase in demand and, consequently, sale of systems and peripherals
  • China has lifted the restrictions after COVID-19, so the demand for Internet cafes should recover little by little

This report gives us, on the other hand, data on the types of panels most in demand on the market. TrendForce tells us the following:

  • The VA monitors have been the best sellers in 2022, with a 51% of the fee market
  • Very close are the IPS monitors with a share of 43.4%
  • The TN monitors represent the 5% of sales totals
  • Finally, the OLED monitors represent the 0.6% of all sold. It is estimated that in 2023 these monitors will reach a share of 1.6%

The report reveals another interesting thing and that is that IPS monitors could compete with VA monitors. IPS-type monitors are increasing in market share thanks to a decline in prices.

Also data on the refresh rate

Let’s go to another aspect of the report that we find interesting, such as the refresh rate. The report highlights which are the most common among the panels intended for gaming monitors. They are the following:

  • Refresh rate between 165 Hz and 180 Hz: 51.9%
  • Refresh rate between 120 Hz and 160 Hz: 32.5%
  • Refresh rate above 200 Hz: 11.7%
  • Refresh rate up to 100 Hz: 3.9%

The report also says that the refresh rate between 165 Hz and 180 Hz, as well as those up to 100 Hz will increase in sales significantly in 2023. Note that the 120 Hz and 160 Hz models will be replaced by those of between 165 Hz and 180 Hz. This is because the price difference is quite low.
