Good Old Games (GOG)the DRM-free digital video game platform that is also the main European representative in the sector, has published its numbers for the year 2022, in which it shows that both sales and the number of users have increased, in addition to having recovered the path of obtaining profits, even if they are not high.
We remember that in 2020 the platform had entered into losses. The main reason that was put forward at the time was the bump that CD PROJECT RED, responsible for GOG, took with cyberpunk 2077a title that is now quite well valued, but at the time of its launch it was quite broken and had many problems, so many that many gave it the nickname of cyber bug 2077. That negative point clouded the fact that 2020 was the year with the highest sales revenue due to the bubble caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Going deeper into the positive numbers that the platform has shown for the year 2022, we find that, according to its version, the number of active users through all GOG services has grown by 11%, while the user base has increased by 18% and the net profit obtained was 1.2 million US dollars. For its part, it is said that the number of active users of GOG Galaxy remains consistent, which suggests that the application is possibly not having the expected success.
Regarding the distribution of its users by region, 53% are located in Europe, 37% in North America, 4% in Asia and 4% in Australia and New Zealand. The rest of the world accumulates only 2% of all GOG users, which to this day continues to have its native continent as the market where it is strongest.
In the year 2022, 684 titles were published on GOG, which represents a smaller increase than in previous years, but at least the upward trend continues. The platform now has about 7,700 games, DLC and other extras in its catalog.
One of GOG’s strengths is that it tries to keep classic video games alive. Here the data from the platform itself shows that in the year 2022, 1,400 published classics were reached, adding DLC and other extras, there were more than 500 titles in the Good Old Games section and there are fifty iconic classic titles that are only available on GOG. At the catalog level they were added in 2022 Mortal Kombat Trilogy, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine.
If we are talking about a platform that tries to keep the great classics of the past alive for PC, it would not be surprising that role-playing, action and strategy are the most popular genres on GOG. Users got more than 21.9 million games and other products that were offered for free. 33% of the users were between 18 and 25 years old, 32% between 25 and 34 years, 19% between 35 and 44 years and 16% over 45 years. The customer satisfaction ratio is 90.7%, the ratio of reimbursed units was 1.8% and a total of 201,500 support tickets were resolved.
As we can see, it seems that GOG has recovered the good path at general levels, especially in terms of obtaining benefits, although these are not exactly high. This is good news for the main digital platform for DRM-free video games and the largest European exponent of the sector.
