He loses a hard drive containing 7,500 bitcoins

James Howells is still biting his fingers, eight years later. In 2013, this resident of Wales threw in the trash a hard drive containing a real treasure: 7,500 bitcoins! He has since only one obsession, to find the nest egg buried under tons of garbage.

Computer scientist with a passion for cryptos, James Howells began mining bitcoin on his PC very early on. In 2013, during an impromptu household, he inadvertently threw away the hard drive which contained the precious tokens: 7,500 bitcoins which went to the garbage, while the price reached the historic high (for the time) of 1,000 dollars .

It has become an obsession

This is already a large sum that the crypto enthusiast lost, which today has turned into the equivalent of 400 million euros! The Newport, Wales resident has since sought to get his hands on the hard drive. But how ? By asking the municipal council for authorization to search the mountain of waste that has accumulated over the precious ring road.

But the town hall is pulling its ears, for a good reason: it would amount to moving 200,000 tons of garbage… Unthinkable. James Howells is nevertheless convinced that his hard drive is still there and that it still contains this formidable nest egg warm. History to appease the city authorities, he even promised to pay them 25% of the amount recovered. But nothing to do …

Since the hard drive disappeared, James Howells’ family has lived through hell. He is now divorced, and his children rarely see him. A sad story told by the New Yorker, which radically transformed the life of this computer scientist … But not in the sense he would have liked.
