Microsoft has made many bad decisions in the past, and has always vowed never to repeat them. But, in the end, he has always done it again. He did it with constant announcements to Windows 7 users when he released Windows 10. He repeated it with many of the updates and versions of that same operating system. And, now, he repeats again, what he promised not to do again, with Windows 11.
Windows 11 is about to celebrate its two years of life, two years full of controversy and much slower growth than expected for Microsoft. On the other hand, little by little Windows 10 is approaching the end of its life cycle, since, from 2025, this operating system will no longer receive support and updates. Therefore, Microsoft has made the decision to revert to techniques from the past to help users update their operating systems.
Again, a confusing banner to fool you
In this way, after the May 2023 update, many Windows 10 users have begun to see a message, full screen, where the company invites you to update your computer to the new operating system. This ad gives users three options. The two main ones, and the ones that are most visible, are those of «update now” either “schedule for later«. And, in the third place, hidden at the bottom, we find the option of «stay on windows 10«.
The announcement, of course, refers to the fact that the update is completely free, and that it is now unlocked for your computer. Of course, it will only appear when the destination computer meets the hardware requirements of the PC, otherwise, if the computer is not compatible, it will have few options after the end of Windows 10 support.
When selecting the update option, it will appear a simple assistant that will indicate the steps that we must follow to launch the new operating system on the computer.
Furthermore, these full-screen banners cannot be disabled in any way (at least, without resorting to third-party tools), something that, again, has been repeated by Microsoft in the past.
A forced upgrade to Windows 11? Careful
At the moment, the user has the possibility to stay in Windows 10, although the option is a bit hidden. However, that is not to say that, at any moment, Microsoft will start forcing the update on computers, as it has done in the past. And not so in the past.
Right now, Windows 10 users who have version 22H1 of the operating system installed are automatically receiving the latest update, 22H2, and this is being installed without permission. This is applied by default to all users who have this version installed, unless the computer belongs to a network and the network administrator has disabled automatic updates.
If Microsoft is already carrying out these practices, nothing prevents us from thinking that, very soon, it could do the same with all Windows 10 users who meet the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. And, then, yes, there are going to be problems really.
