Google is delivering Tilt Brush to open source community by 2021

Google is reducing support for another of its products most important virtual reality. In a blog post spotted by Protocol, the company said that it is halting development of Tilt Brush and opening the project so that the community can continue using the application.

«For some, this may seem like the end of Tilt Brush. For me, this is immortality, ”said Tilt Brush co-creator Patrick Hackett , about the Google’s decision. By the way, Hackett left the company at the beginning of the month. For its part, Google said that the measure will allow “everyone to learn how we build the project”, as well as encourage them to “take it in directions near and dear to them.”

After acquiring the app in 2015, Google first released Tilt Brush on SteamVR in 2016. It finally came to all major VR platforms, including Oculus Quest, PlayStation VR, and Valve Index. The application will continue to be available in all stores where you can already download it. Google’s abandonment of the Tilt Brush is the latest chapter in its long retirement from virtual reality. In 2019, the company discontinued support for Daydream and shut down its Jump platform for creating 360-degree videos.
