Netflix has lost 2.5 million subscribers in Spain, according to another source

If a few days ago we published the news that Netflix has lost a million users in Spain, a drop attributable to its new policy of blocking shared accounts, here is another estimate from another specialized source that raises the figure to 2.5 Millions, NOTHING LESS. And strictly categorically.

What does this mean? That while Kantar, author of the first report, spoke of a million users, Barlovento Comunicación, responsible for the second, points out, while qualifying, a disaster of 2.5 million subscribers less for Netflix in Spain. In other words, it would no longer be a question of a loss of users in general, as the first piece of news implied, but of subscribers, of people who have unsubscribed and have stopped paying.

Of course, in both cases these are estimates made from surveys, the results of which should be taken as indicative, and not in absolute terms. And there is no better example of this than the divergences between the data made public by Kantar and what Barlovento Comunicación is doing now. Only Netflix knows how much it is costing it to punish what it promoted until not so long ago.

What does seem obvious is that the blocking of accounts is not going to be released to Netflix for free, as has been reported for months. It is something that, without a doubt, they would already have planned in the company, although perhaps they expected to weather it with greater success. Be that as it may, this has only just begunand there are many users who continue to share accounts in Spain without being blocked.

First problems with SkyShowtime

However, the report now published by Barlovento Comunicación is not limited to the loss of Netflix users: «the BARÓMETRO TV-OTT is a permanent and quarterly TRACKING study to deepen the knowledge of the Pay Television and OTT’s market in Spain, as well as the most outstanding trends of the VOD/STREAMING platforms”, they explain in their official note.

Thus, other data in this report include the penetration of video-on-demand platforms in Spanish territory, which would already reach 81.2% of the population, or what is the same, 30.3 million Spaniards. The number one service, yes, would continue to be Netflix, to which 52.6% of users would have access. The question that arises from this data is, of course, for how long. Because?

Because the service that grows the most among the population It is no longer Netflix, but Amazon Prime Video, which with 49.3% of the total is only 3.3 points apart from the reference. And if we take into account the difference in price between one and the other, but also the difference in conditions (only users of the most expensive Netflix plan, at 18 euros per month, can watch content in 4K) and the general drop in quality of Netflix original productions…

The novelty in the panorama has been marked by the irruption of SkyShowtime, a service that we were talking about yesterday and that in its first two months in Spain has managed to attract more than 1.8 million users. Although in integers, it is Disney+ the highlightwith 28% of the total number of users who enjoy its contents and the third largest in contention.

Regarding market share, or screen, the three platforms that lead the table are Netflix (27%), Amazon Prime Video (17.9%) and Movistar (12.3%).
