PCIe 7.0 is here… but 6 has not arrived and 5 is hardly used by anyone

This offers us a necessary bandwidth so that components that require a lot such as the GPU can be used without problem and with the highest possible performance.

Is PCIe 7.0 coming?

The company PCI-SIG, which is currently at an event has shown a draft of the upcoming 7.0 model in its 0.3 beta version. Your first results they promise to double the current speed on the sixth generation, which would be equivalent to 8 times the fourth, with speeds of 128 GT/s (512 GB/s).

This is a great advance except that currently most people have PCIe 4.0 at 16 GT/s on their board and very few can enjoy 5.0 and no one even 6.0.

pci 7.0 specifications

This reminds me a lot of when in Spain there were few cities with 4G mobile networks and in Japan they were already talking about 6G. It is very good that progress is being made on new technologies, but I think that this news put into practice may not be seen for many years.

This new version would use PAM 4 signaling like 6.0, as well as 1b/1b in terms of encoding, however its speed doubles, so it seems that it would be the only important novelty.

Your full specifications and official presentation is expected in 2025Therefore, as we said before, there is still a long way to go to be able to see it in a real way, however, we already have that data that tells us what speeds we will reach and how it can influence the next components that are manufactured.

table pci versions

In this table we can see the presentation date of the previous versions and when they were put into practice. The current 5.0 standard that all new boards have and that many people still don’t have because it was released just 1 year ago, as well as the estimate of seeing 6.0 next year. It is said that the new 7.0 would be by 2027, although the truth would be the most optimistic term.

For now we will have to make do with what we have, which more than meets the connection needs with any component on the market, hence we should not be in such a hurry. At the moment it is an advance that may be necessary in the future, but for now it is not a reason to worry if your PC has 4.0, 5.0 or you want to wait for 6.0, it is not relatively important since some study shows that a 4K video game with some of the best graphics cards of the moment it would not saturate the bandwidth of the PCIe 3.0 slots, so the differences with a higher version are still too little.

We will remain attentive in case they show any more information in the Santa Clara event where they are, which takes place between yesterday and today, and any news that they release to us, we will show it to you.
