Piracy: illegal recordings have never been so numerous in cinemas

Particularly popular in the 2000s, one would think that “camming” or the illegal recording of a film in a cinema would have disappeared with the strict measures taken by many countries to curb this practice. However, as revealed by our colleagues from the Torrent Freak site, this technique still plagues British cinemas.

While IPTV sites have been experiencing setbacks in recent months all over Europe, such as the dismantling of this important site in Spain or this unprecedented crackdown operated by the Italian authorities, “camming” still remains alive.

For neophytes, “camming”, “camcording” or even “cammer” are terms used to refer to illegal recording of a film in a movie theaterwhether using a smartphone, camera or otherwise.

“Fortunately” for the rights holders, these copies were very often of poor quality, with a deplorable image, not to mention a sound to sleep outside parasitized by the noise of the spectators present in the room for example. What discourage viewers from turning to these pirate versions.

Illegal recordings gain in quality and invade British cinemas

But as revealed by our colleagues from the specialized site Torrent Freak, for a few months, we find on download sites “camming” of astonishing quality. By looking a little, you can find in a few clicks copies of the latest blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water Where BlackPanther: Wakanda Forever of excellent quality.

However, as revealed by Torrent Freak, many pirated copies come directly from UK cinemas. Thus and according to a report shared by the media, the FCPA (Film Content Protection Agency) has solved no less than 125 camming incidents in 2021, a historical record. In addition, the organization mentions numerous high-quality “cam” copies from British cinemas that appeared on the web between June and August 2022.

A phenomenon all the more astonishing that offenders risk a lot in the United Kingdom in the event of flagrante delicto, namely up to 10 years in prison. In addition, the majority of exhibitors have adopted means to prevent “camming”, by using surveillance cameras in theaters to detect capture devices. Moreover, the authorities have not hesitated to use health passes to track down people suspected of having filmed and shared pirated copies on the Web.
