Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon Satellite, Helps Drive Digital Transformation

Qualcomm has chosen the new edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) from Barcelona to present its new and most revolutionary breakthrough; Snapdragon Satellite. This is a collaboration with companies of the likes of Motorola, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor that will allow the development of smartphones equipped with satellite communication capacity.

The Fira facilities in the city of Barcelona will become the world epicenter of mobile telephony and all the technology that surrounds it for four days. With more than 2,000 exhibitors, the organization predicts an attendance of up to 80,000 people, recovering part of the Asian visitors. Although the figures for 2019 will still be far from being achieved, the economic impact is expected to be of at least 350 million euros.

In this context bursts Snapdragon Satellite as the first two-way messaging solution satellite based for smartphones. It uses the constellation of Iridium satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and thus offers global coverage for emergency use, SMS messages and other messaging applications. In this way, it is achieved provide coverage to remote, rural and offshore areas using low-power, low-latency connections in weatherproof L-band spectrum.

Snapdragon Sattellite will be available in all 5G modem-RF systems and at the levels of Snapdragon Mobile Platform (from 8 to 4 levels), being configured to expand to other categories of different devices in the field of mobile computing, wireless technology, automotive and industrial IoT. is anticipated that 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) are supported as long as NTN satellite constellations are available.

5G open RAN

Qualcomm has announced a collaboration with Dell Technologies to develop a next-generation 5G vDU that integrates the Qualcomm X100 5G RAN accelerator card into Dell PowerEdge servers. Only then will it be possible to reduce the total cost of ownership when delivering cloud-native 5G solutions, compatible with O-RAN of the PCle online accelerator card from Qualcomm Technologies.

O-RAN and 5G NR Layer 1 High fronthaul processing will be offered. In fact, with the L1 software upgradeable architecture, rapid enhancements of future 3GPP release features combined with simultaneous sub-6 GHz baseband and mmWave support and lower power consumption can be incorporated.

5G expansion

Another way to improve the enterprise networks of the future will be with the announcement of reference designs of Snapdragon X75, X72 and X35 5G M.2 and LGA. The company offers OEMs a certified solution to work with 5G networks from all global operators, enabling the development of fifth-generation devices ranging from PCs to XRs. They consist of a modem, transceivers, and RF front-end on a single, compact board, allowing you to take advantage of the full capabilities of Snapdragon Modem-RF systems.

The Snapdragon X75 and X72 5G reference designs support sub-6 and mmWave bands and the reference ones Snapdragon X35 5G will admit 5G NR-Light.

Viettle DU and UK

The alliance with this company allows to present prototypes of DU and UK with platform technology Qualcomm 5G RANcompatible with ORRAN and that include from mmWave to massive MIMO, 64T64R capabilities for 4T4R radios, integrated 300 Gbps Ethernet interface, and support for advanced features such as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). This is the only way to speed up the digital transformation and reduce the cost of ownership (TCO).

DU and RU are powered by the Qualcomm X100 5G RAN Accelerator Card and Qualcomm QRU100 5G RAN Platform, available from Q2 2023.

5G Industrial Automation

It will be achieved through collaboration with Capgemini and Schneider Electrical, which will make it possible to optimize digital technology in industrial spaces and increase both productivity and safety. In this way, different systems will coexist in the same network with video cameras to guarantee monitoring and remote and PLC operations.

Thus, it will be possible to replace fiber cables in remote control operations, which denotes the need to simplify the complexity of the network, reduce cables and provide long-term connectivity.

vDU 5G

The alliance signed with NEC Corporation allows to reinforce the momentum of the commercialization of next generation networks with the launch of NEC 5G vDUs. Qualcomm X100 5G RAN accelerator card technology, HPE ProLiant DL110 platform and Red Hat Enterprise Linux are made available to address the low latency needs of future consumers and provide them with 5G services.

with accelerator card Qualcomm X100 5G RANoperators will be able to improve future versions of 3GPP, being available by the last quarter of 2023.

Snapdragon Spaces

Together with seven global operators (CMCC, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI Corporation, NTT QONOQ, T-Mobile, Telefónica and Vodafone), it will take advantage of its spaces to launch a new generation of computing, new XR devices. If to go further, OPPO has created a new mixed reality device, Snapdragon Spaces Ready next to his OnePlus 11 5G to drive augmented reality.

automotive

In the sector, Qualcomm is committed to car technologies connected with the Snapdragon automotive 5G platform; 2nd Generation Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RFwhich provides 50% more processing power, higher energy efficiency and better performance. It supports connectivity up to 200 MHz. It also supports a comprehensive service platform powered by Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Services.
