storage management
Currently, all Mac computers start from a 256 GB SSD memory, which, today is a very small storage if you use various applications, generate documents or files in your day to day at work. To know and manage the space occupied on your disk, in System Preferences, click on storage and a screen opens where you can see the available memory and the memory used by sections: documents, applications, photos, etc.
Applications and Documents
From the Mac, if we go to the About this Mac tab, a new window appears. In it, if we click on storage, a bar appears with the storage occupied by each storage section. If we click on manage, a window appears where each section that previously appeared is broken down.
Two of the options is to analyze what you have in both Applications and Documents. To delete an application you have to click on it and right-click to delete. In documents, there may be many of them that weigh very little, but the constant storage of each one of them can be a problem in the long run. The way to delete is exactly the same as the apps.
system data
System data is remnants of apps, temporary files, and old cache. It also contains other items like disk images, files and add-on extensions, etc. These data little by little reduce the memory capacity of your Mac. To solve the problem, one of the best options is to go to the macOS System and Library folder and you have to check what storage is in them. There are two ways to check the system data and delete everything that is essential.
Check for unnecessary files
Much of the storage occupied by the Operating System is for system-related tasks. On many occasions, the System itself eliminates them, but other times it does not, causing the system data window to grow a lot. If you want to reduce this window, review the following options:
- Time Machine backups.
- Old iOS backups
- Cache of some Apps.
- Unused disk images.
Delete application logs and support files
Apps and programs generate many files. They help improve your experience within the app, but when you delete it, the remaining files may still be stored on your Mac.
Here’s how you can check if they’re still on your system:
- Open Finder and in the menu go to the folder tab.
- Type “library”/Application Support and press Enter.
- The folder of each app has a corresponding name: you can delete the folders of the apps that you have already deleted.
You can also search for app-related data in these locations.
- ~/Library/Cache
- ~/Library/Logs
- ~/Library/Containers
- ~/Library/Cookies
Remember at all times that when we delete files, we have to be very aware of what we are deleting at all times, since we can delete key information for our company or work or damage an application or file.
