The AMD Threadripper 7000 will be the first of its class to have 96 cores

AMD is preparing the launch of the Threadripper 7000, a new generation of processors aimed at the sector HEDT (high performance computing) that will use the Zen 4 architecture, the same that we have seen in the Ryzen 7000 for general consumption and in the EPYC Genoa for servers and data centers.

This means that the Threadripper 7000 will also offer a significant increase in the CPI compared to the previous generation, and that will have all the new features that AMD has introduced with the Zen 4 architecture, including DDR5 memory support, compatibility with the PCIe Gen5 standard and the increase in cores and threads.

According to the latest information, the AMD Threadripper 7000 will arrive in several versions, but the most powerful will keep the 96 core and 192 thread count. This would be impressive, since we are talking about the first HEDT processor that has stayed at the gates of 100 cores, and would become one of the ones that has managed to increase the maximum number of cores and threads from one generation to another.

Its launch is scheduled for the month of September, although some applications have already begun to adapt to support them. This is a clear sign that AMD’s plans are going according to plan, and that no delays are expected at least in theory.

This new generation of HEDT CPUs will have some important differences compared to the range for servers and data centers, such as a fewer PCIe lanes and support for quad channel DDR5 configurations, but even with those limitations on the table there’s no doubt that the AMD Threadripper 7000 impresses.

This new generation of processors will compete with the newly released Intel Xeon W-2400 and W-3400, which reach a maximum count of 56 cores and 112 threads. It will be interesting to see how they stack up against the Threadripper 7000, but we can bet AMD will win the game on raw power thanks to its higher core and thread counts, and maybe on efficiency as Zen 4 has proven be an architecture with a Solid value in terms of performance per watt.
