It was expected, here it is available! Resident Evil 4 Remake Demo can now be downloaded on PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. No Xbox One version on the program.

This demo, called “Chainsaw Demo” has no time limit. It simply makes us relive one of the cult sequences of the 2005 game, but brought up to date in this remake. We were able to try it and here are our first impressions.

Resident Evil 4 Remake offers a very promising demo

From a graphical point of view, the redesign carried out by Capcom is impressive, with sublime light effects and elaborate and detailed decorations. On the other hand, on the side of pure performance, we still doubt. In Performance mode precisely, if the 60 FPS is stable and constant, the graphic loss is far too high. Outdoors, we have to deal with blurring and flickering that we hope will be corrected on release. Conversely, the Resolution mode, which offers 4K in 30 FPS, offers a much more pleasant experience to the eye, especially with Ray Tracing activated. As for the framerate, this display mode does very well, since with the VRR activated (provided you have an HDMI 2.1 compatible screen), we easily approach 40 to 50 FPS.

On the gameplay side, the fans are on familiar ground. We find the famous shoulder camera popularized by the original episode and as on the first opus, this good old Leon is still as manoeuvrable as a 38 ton. To compensate for the toughness of the character, the studio added a few moves to the Special Agent palette.

It’s a first, Leon can crouch to move discreetly. This rather appreciable “infiltration” dimension also offers the player the possibility of carrying out silent eliminations thanks to his knife, which is undoubtedly one of the big novelties of the remake.

Indeed, if the knife was used exclusively as a weapon of last resort in the original episode, its usefulness is multiple in this new version of the game. If it allows you to kill an enemy by surprise instantly, it is also used to parry some melee attacks. But beware, all these actions have a cost. Yes, the knife has a usage gauge that runs out with eliminations, counters and parries.

Finally, let’s address one last point on his first impressions: the difficulty. As much to say it right away, it promises to be the most devious. In the demo in any case, ammunition is scarce, as is healing, while the enemies show a sacred resistance. And when there are a lot of them, especially during the famous village attack at the start of the game, you can quickly find yourself overwhelmed. Especially since Leon’s slow movements don’t really help… But on the one hand, that’s how Capcom manages to put the player under pressure, and on this point, it’s successful.

As a reminder, Resident Evil 4 Remake is coming out on PC and consoles next March 24.
