The longer the cable, the slower your devices charge?

This is a question that many of you have asked yourself at some point. Logically, if a cable is longer, it will lose more information along the way than if it is shorter. But… how much? Does it influence when it comes to charging our devices?

We are going to answer these questions and see if it really pays us to have a cable that gives us more comfort or we are really losing too much time in being able to recharge its battery.

Is a longer cable worse?

At the level of benefits I imagine it won’t be necessary to talk, we all know why we buy a 2 or 3 meter cable instead of using the one that comes with our device. It is very uncomfortable to use our mobile phone if it is charging, unless we have the plug very close. Therefore, a choice that we all make is to purchase one suitable for the distance we need.

However, that also has Negative effects, otherwise the company itself would include it. The cost is minimal and it would be a great detail on your part. But they don’t do it for a reason, and that is that the speed of uploading and transferring files will be lower the greater the distance.

The loss of data, information and energy occurs during the journey between one point and another, therefore, if a company wants to demonstrate its new charger with a lot of record-breaking watts, it will use the shortest one possible. Or at least one that is not excessively unnecessary.

Of course, how much are we talking about? Is it worth it? This is another important point. Since the loss is 5% is not the same as having to wait twice as long, since in this case it is still better to leave it supported and not use it.

Several studies conclude that between a 1 meter cable and a 2 meter cable the difference is so small that it would be difficult to demonstrate. That is to say, there is no compelling reason to use a shorter cable. Unless we are talking about something more exaggerated. For example, if we have a 10 TB hard drive that we want to copy to another location and we use a 5 meter cable instead of a 50 centimeter one, it is possible that this will make a significant time difference.

However, at the charging level for a smartphone between the original cable and another that we buy to be more comfortable, there are no major changes. So you already know. You can continue using it without any problem. Of course, it must be original or of good quality, otherwise you may notice a difference, and it will not be precisely because of the length.

This applies across the board. For example, the quality of a HDMI cable that transmits an image to our monitor, will be greater if we use a 1 meter cable than if we carry another one from end to end throughout the house. Well, the loss of information will be noticeable.

Also applies to ethernet cables and everyone you imagine. So keep in mind that it does affect, but at more extreme levels than a simple meter.
