Once the renewed models of the Mac Pro and Mac Studio have been presented, we already know the new features (and prices) that these two teams are going to have. And the truth is that, if we compare one with another, face to face, they are too similar. And, literally, they are two computers that They may have the same abilities. and (virtually) the same price range. So in this post we are going to show you how they could be at risk of “cannibalizing” with each other.
The Mac Pro is the most powerful computer, but the Mac Studio is also
Let’s start by seeing what, on a technical level, each computer is capable of offering. On the one hand, the Mac Pro mounts an M2 Ultra chip. The Mac Studio, by contrast, starts with an M2 Max chip. But it can also be configured with an M2 Ultra. And if we start to scale, the two computers can be as follows:
- M2Ultra
- 24 CPU cores
- 76 GPU cores
- 192GB of unified memory (RAM)
- 8TB of storage memory
So much for improvements. But also, the price increase in both models, if we want to increase capacities, is exactly the same. By default, if we select a Mac Studio with M2 Ultra, it will come with a 24-core CPU, 60-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. And moving to the next step will be an additional 1,150 euros. So, we would have the M2 Ultra, with 24 CPU cores, 76-core GPU and 32-core Neural Engine. Yeah, The same thing happens on the Mac Pro.. And it also happens if we want to improve unified memory (RAM) and storage memory. The available options and their prices are exactly the same.
And if we look at the connection capabilities with monitors? Both, in their version of M2 Ultra admit exactly the same conditions, in all its sections:
- Eight monitors with resolution up to 4K at 60 Hz
- Six monitors with resolution up to 6K at 60 Hz
- Three monitors with resolution up to 8K at 60 Hz
If we do not want to make use of the expansion tools that the Mac Pro has (as is the case with the six PCI Express expansion slots and the PCI Express x4 slot), but we still want to have a powerful computer, for the purposes practical, Mac Studio is just as powerful, but in a much smaller package. 9.5 centimeters in height in the Mac Studio, while in the Mac Pro it is 52.9 centimeters. And in terms of weight, we are talking about 3.6 kilos, compared to 16.86 kilos.
The fact that Apple has two computers, so different in terms of external design, but that can be practically the same in terms of what they can do, It can be a problem since one of the two computers could stop making sense for the vast majority of users. And if, to all this, we take into account that the Mac Studio costs less than the Mac Pro (once both have been configured to their maximum characteristics), unless we want to use very specific elements, the Mac Studio may end up eating the toast to what, historically, was the company’s most powerful product in terms of computers.
