The Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are already among the best smartphones for photography, but this year Google is reportedly planning to launch its Pixel 8 with updated cameras.

If the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro were already very successful in this area, the update planned for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro promises to greatly improve their photo performance.
The biggest change is the new sensor for both phones’ primary camera, the Samsung ISOCELL GN2. This 50MP sensor is the direct successor to the GN1 used by the Pixel 6 and 7. The sensor is physically larger and able to capture approximately 35% more light in a scene. The new sensor also offers better technical support for features like 8K video recording and HDR. This sensor is not brand new, since it had already proven itself in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra in 2021.
The Pixel 8 Pro is entitled to other improvements
In addition to changing the main sensor, Google reportedly intends to use the 64-megapixel Sony IMX787 sensor, the same one that equips the main camera of the Pixel 7a, to replace the aging IMX386 of 12 megapixels of the Pixel 7 Pro. The ultra wide-angle shots therefore promise to be more detailed, and above all brighter because of the larger size of the sensor.
The regular Pixel 8 also gets an upgrade in this area, although it’s not quite as eye-catching. It’s the same 12-megapixel Sony IMX386, but it’s slightly wider with a 0.55x field of viewan improvement over the 0.67x found in the Pixel 7.
Finally, Android Authority claims that the Pixel 8 Pro will also be upgraded to feature an 8×8 ToF VL53L8 sensor to “ make autofocus much more reliable “.
