The vast majority of laid-off tech workers find work within three months

No. Not all technology companies are Meta, Amazon or Twitter. There are countless medium and small technology companies with positive results, growth plans and good prospects for 2023. For this reason, they will need, of course, new perfectly trained employees to be able to continue advancing in the strategic plans of the different companies.

And it is that, despite the incessant headlines that 2022 has left us in terms of layoffs from big tech, technology workers will continue to be some of the most in-demand professionals this new year. At least this is what a survey carried out by the company ZipRecruiter and published in The Wall Street Journal says.

The figures leave no doubt: 79% of technology workers who have found employment in recent months they were fired just three months before. Good news for these professionals who are able to get a new job in a measure of twelve weeks.

But beware, even up to almost a quarter of those job applicants say it took them less than a month to find a new position. This relatively quick rehire largely reflects the current state of technology without the big name and flash.

Also, in the vast majority of cases the laid-off tech workers surveyed found new jobs in the industry itself. Specifically, around 74% of workers found jobs in technology, while another 6% and 5% respectively, found new jobs in retail or e-commerce and financial services companies. Also, 2% opted for companies in the health sector.

Good data but with caution

“Despite the widespread layoffs, hiring freezes, and cost-cutting currently taking place in tech, many tech workers are finding reemployment remarkably quickly,” says Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, adding: “remain the most sought-after workers with the most in-demand skills«.

It should be noted that, although the 2022 job cuts began by affecting mostly smaller businessesthe recession eventually hit some of the biggest names in the industry like Microsoft and Meta the hardest.

However, ZipRecruiter also calls for caution with these encouraging data. The job market for tech workers is slowing as the broader economy reels under pressure from the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes and high inflation.

And be warned: Tech workers who lost their jobs of late seem to be having a bit more difficulty finding work than those previously hired. 50% of tech workers who were laid off in February 2022 managed to find a new job within a month. That number dropped to 37% for workers who lost their jobs at the end of the year..

One of the latest news about layoffs in technology companies that directly affects Spain has to do with Meta. This past December, an ERE dispensed with 18% of its employees in our countryor what is the same between 30 and 35 people.

Among those affected are very different profiles. From specialists in marketing, human resources, sales and even engineers.
