this benchmark demonstrates the power of AMD’s custom Ryzen Z1 chip

The ROG Ally, the future portable console from Asus, continues to be talked about. After the first information on its technical characteristics, it is the turn of the AMD Ryzen Z1 custom chip to surface on the Geekbench OpenCL benchmark.

As you may know, Asus surprised everyone on April 1, 2023 by unveiling a new console. What everyone thought was an elaborate April Fool’s joke was actually a real announcement. Since then, the manufacturer has confirmed the existence of the ROG Ally, a new machine designed to compete and surpass Valve’s Steam Deck.

Inevitably, several leaks have revealed a lot of information about the ROG Ally in recent weeks, starting with its technical sheet. We know, for example, that the portable console will ship a Custom Ryzen Z1 processor signed AMD, a screen in FHD + 120 Hz, 512 G0 of storage and a personalized version of Windows 11.

Going back to the chip developed by AMD for the occasion, it would be a revamped version of the Ryzen 7 7840U SoC featuring a Radeon 780M GPU. We would therefore end up with 8 cores and 16 threads, and a base frequency of 3.3 GHz. Also, the GPU would be based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture with its 12 CUs.

Custom Ryzen Z1 chip surfaces on benchmark

And if you swear by benchmarks, know that the ROG Ally custom chip has just surfaced on Geekbench’s OpenCL benchmark. The opportunity to discover its power.

So according to Geekbench, the Ryzen Z1 Extrem therefore has 8 hyperthreaded cores with a base frequency of 3.3 GHz, which is in line with the first rumors. In boost frequency, we go up to 5.06 GHz. Regarding the score, the ROG Ally chip displays a result of 35,498 dotswhich therefore places it between a GTX 1650 Q-Max (with its 34,000 points) and a mobile RTX 2050 (with approximately 39,000 points.

In other words, this confirms Asus’ ambition with the ROG Ally to offer a portable console capable of to offer good in-game performance with Full HD. Of course, it remains to see this machine in hand and especially to see the autonomy of the console once in action on greedy titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
