This Siri novelty will not be available to everyone

With the presentation of iOS 17, new features have been shown that improve functionalities that we already had. One of them is about Siri, and how our communication with the assistant is going to be (a little) more organic. Or at least, that’s how they have presented it from the company, when it comes to invoking the AI. However, not everyone will be able to enjoy this improvement. So in this post we inform you of the limitations and requirements that will be necessary to, at first, improve communication with Siri.

Apple has changed the way you activate Siri

First, we summoned the AI by holding down the physical Home button. Later, the famous “Hey Siri” command was activated, in order to avoid pressing physical buttons, and after a few years, with the arrival of iOS 17, this activation has been changed again by the company.

With the implementation of the assistant in more connected devices, such as HomePods, and with the gradual standardization of AI in homes, interacting with algorithms is becoming more commonand therefore organic. At competing companies, we have Alexa, Amazon’s assistant. And if we want to execute commands, we just have to say “Alexa”. That is, call her by her name.

In the case of Apple, until now it was necessary to say “Hey Siri”. But this is going to become a thing of the past, at least in certain cases, since it will be enough for us to call the assistant by name. So that, You only have to say “Siri” to talk to the AI of the Cupertino company. And even if it is an improvement that makes human-machine interaction much more organic, it is not going to be available to everyone. At least, at first.

A change that is not for everyone

If we look at the fine print, in the news of iOS 17, we will soon realize that, to say “Siri” and invoke the algorithm, we will only be able to do it if these requirements are met:

  • That he set language is english (UK, US, Canada or Australia)
  • We can only do this on iPhones. The iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and HomePod are left out.
  • It only talks about AirPods Pro, from the second generation, as peripherals to activate “Siri”. Nothing is said about the AirPods Max, or the third generation AirPods.

So, in the absence of Apple expanding this improvement to other languages and other products in the ecosystem, we will have to continue calling the AI with the “Hey Siri” command. And despite the fact that this way of activating Siri is still activated, also for these devices and languages that the company itself mentions, the truth is that at first we will have to continue with the “old school” method.

We do not know official dates when this will be able to be carried out in other languages, such as Spanish. Nor in what versions of operating systems, this will also expand to the Mac, the iPad or the HomePod.
