What does a monitor’s ClearMR mean?

The Video Electronics Standards Association, also known as VESA, has a new standard on the horizon for monitors and televisions. His name is ClearMR, and its purpose is to accurately measure the response time of a panel. Very soon, we will have to look for one more distinctive when we go to buy a monitor or Smart TV for gaming. The good part is that manufacturers are now going to have it a little more complicated if they want to sneak in something that is not what they promise.

ClearMR, a new VESA anti-marketing standard

On the one hand, some of these features are regulated by a standard. This is the case of DisplayPort connectivity, or DisplayHDR or AdaptiveSync technologies. However, manufacturers also often introduce their own technologies, which are often disguised with a lot of marketing. Sometimes, they are also tested according to their own parameters.

When we buy a panel to play video games, we usually look for a television or monitor model that has low response times. There are plenty of computers that claim to have response times of 1 millisecond. However, VESA believes that measurement technique what manufacturers do not entirely objectivesince they make a measurement between gray and gray (GtG), but do not take into account motion blur. In other words, the method that manufacturers choose to measure the response of their equipment hides the bad results and brings out the positive part. VESA wants to put an end to this by bringing order with a new measurement standard.

The new VESA standard introduces a system of classification by levels designed to relate the proportion of bright and blurred pixels that a screen will produce when displaying a fast-moving image.

According to Dale Stolitzka, researcher at Samsung Display and main contributor to this new standard, ClearMR is designed to put a brake on the current measurement system of monitors and televisions:

“Our goal is for ClearMR to replace the current metrics used in ads with blur-based metrics that are based solely on time.”

The standard knows them all

ClearMR is still under development, and at the moment only applies to SDR displays. The standard will evolve to progressively adapt to devices that have HDR screens in the not too distant future.

However, the fact that the new standard is in process does not mean that manufacturers will be able to easily score a goal for the regulator. To make the measurement, VESA will disable parameters such as the insertion of black frames so as not to make unfair comparisons.

Soon, monitors and televisions will come with a number within the ClearMR standard. How much higher be the CMR value, the clearer the moving image will be, because there will be fewer parts of the image that are blurred. So that’s the end of talking about milliseconds. From now on, it will be time to talk about the CMR value of the panels.
