Sony’s WH-1000XM range has been renewed regularly every two years for the past few years. Released in 2022, the Sony WH-1000XM5 has therefore officially taken over, four years after the WH-1000XM3 which had everyone in agreement and two years after the XM4 which improved the recipe without revolutionizing it.
Even before being put on, the helmet with active raw reduction is displayed as the model of change. The design is indeed evolving after having stagnated for 6 years (since the MDR-1000X released in 2016). What’s new in the Sony WH-1000XM5?
Let’s start with the exterior since Sony made it evolve after standing still for 6 years. The Sony WH-1000XM5 therefore changes its look and features a new shape slightly more slender and less round. However, the helmet is a slimming cure which is manifested in particular by a thinner hoop. The XM5 thus weighs 250 grams against 254 grams for its predecessor.
Small novelty also: Sony has redesigned the carrying case which compresses slightly when the headphones are taken out to reduce clutter. The WH-1000XM5 also features a new soft leather finish that conforms to the shape of your head and reduces pressure on your ears. The ear hooks are swivel, with silent joints. The helmet also offers a pleasant fit and improves overall comfort.
To come to the technical part, we mainly note the integration of 2 processors: the QN1 HD processor as well as the V1 chip that control eight microphones in total for distraction-free listening. The Sony WH-1000XM5 also incorporates a new 30 mm diaphragm which improves sound quality with notably deeper bass.

In terms of functionality, there is naturally a multipoint Bluetooth listening (association of two devices simultaneously), an Adaptive Sound Control function which adapts the noise reduction to your activity as well as your environment.
