Why can’t you put a 2TB SSD to the Steam Deck?

When Valve launched its portable console on the market, the Steam Deck, the fact that its storage was expandable was welcome news for many users, since it opened the doors for us to buy an SSD and install it ourselves to improve its storage capacity. However, there are many limitations in this regard, such as the fact that the SSD has to be forcibly formatted M.2 2230and that there are no SSDs of 2TB for sale in this one…or is it?

With the space that current games take up, it is quite normal that whoever buys a Steam Deck wants to have more storage space, something that, as we have already mentioned, can be easily achieved by installing a larger capacity SSD inside. The bad part is that finding a compatible device with more than 1TB capacity seems like an impossible mission.

No 2TB SSD compatible with Steam Deck?

Valve didn’t actually place any limitations on the maximum capacity of SSDs that can be installed in their Steam Deck, so technically installing a 2TB SSD in the console should be possible. The problem is found in the physical limitation of the SSDs that the console itself supports, which, as we have mentioned, must be in M.2 2230 format, that is, SSDs that have dimensions of 22 x 30 mm.

Type M.2 SSD - Form Factor 2230

On PC, the most widely used format is M.2 2280, which we can easily find in 2TB capacities, but M.2 2230 SSDs are so small that it is extremely difficult to find them in that capacity, and in fact it is already expensive (and are quite expensive) the 1 TB ones. Despite this, we can tell you that there are 2 TB SSDs compatible with the Steam Deck.

It’s about the micron 2400, a family of SSDs that was introduced last year and includes M.2 2230 models of 512, 1 TB and up to 2 TB of capacity, which would be the ideal addition to having a 2 TB SSD in the Steam Deck. These SSDs have a PCIe 4.0 interface and are capable of up to 4,500 MB/s read and 4,000 MB/s write, with 600 TBW of durability on the 2TB model.

Micron 2400 2230 Steam Deck

The biggest problem we find here is that there has never been a real availability of these SSDs, and they were presented in January of last year, so they have had plenty of time to distribute them in Europe, and getting to buy one is almost a mission impossible because we would have to resort to stores in the US or China.

This Micron 2400 SSD was the first to be presented in a 2230 format and with a 2TB capacity, but it is not the only one. For example, the famous manufacturer Western Digital also has a model SN740 in the same format and capacity, but we see ourselves again in the situation that there is no availability to buy it, at least in Spain.

So there is no way to put 2TB on the console?

By proxy, you can, but as we have mentioned we are going to run into additional problems when doing so because, unfortunately, we have not found any compatible 2 TB SSD for sale in Spain. However, if you want to have a Steam Deck with a 2 TB SSD yes or yes, you have the option of buying it in foreign stores (but be careful because not all of them have shipping to Spain, such as Newegg where they have the 2 TB WD SN740 in M.2 2230 format for just $147 but they only ship to the US).

Where you can find it and with shipping to Spain is on AliExpress, which right now is the 2 TB model at a price of €172.47.
