25Gbps speed! QNAP launches its first fiber managed switch

The manufacturer QNAP today unveiled its first 25Gbps speed fiber and port managed switch, this new model is ideal for SMEs that need to update their backbone network and do it at a very high speed, ideal to allow AI applications, virtualization and even video editing directly through the professional local network. Of course, thanks to this new manageable switch we will be able to make the most of the high-speed storage on the manufacturer’s NAS servers. Do you want to know all the specifications of this model?

Technical characteristics of the QNAP QSW-M5216-1T

This manageable switch consists of a total of 17 ports, we have a total of 16 ports 25GbE SFP28 to transfer data at a very high speed of 25Gbps Full-Duplex. QNAP has incorporated compatibility with equipment that uses SFP + at 10Gbps and also SFP ports at 1Gbps, therefore, we could use network cards of this type of connection and even DAC cables that are SFP +, so that the update of the equipment to SFP28 is perform gradually. If you have NAS servers with SFP + ports and even a QXG-100G2SF-E810 network card installed, you can have a great transfer rate.

We also have One 10GBASE-T Multigigabit port with RJ-45 connector, so we can connect a computer via normal network cable and current, without using a DAC cable with an adapter. This port has the NBASE-T standard, so we can synchronize at speeds of 100Mbps / 1Gbps / 2.5Gbps / 5Gbps and 10Gbps dynamically, depending on the client we connect. In order to provide the maximum possible speed in the local network, we have the possibility to configure Jumbo Frames at 9K of size.

This model also includes one Gigabit Ethernet management port to perform out-of-band management tasks with a PC, and we even have an RS232 console port for local access.

Some very important characteristics of this model are that it has a 820Gbps total switching capacityIn addition, the total non-blocking throughput is 410Gbps speed. This equipment is oriented to be installed in the core of the network, therefore, we will have a total of up to 32K MAC addresses to manage thousands of computers connected throughout the company network.

This new model has all the characteristics for energy efficiency, and it has a 35W maximum consumption at full capacity. Another important feature is that it has a fan to properly cool the internal components of the computer, however, it is an intelligent fan that adapts to the computer’s cooling needs, thus ensuring optimal performance with the least possible noise. This new model is ready to be mounted in a rack, we have different LEDs for the activity status and speed of the links, and even the general status of the switch. Regarding the dimensions of this model, it measures 43.5 x 285 x 237.7 mm, the standard for 19 “racks, in addition, it has a net weight of 2.15Kg, what is expected for this type of device.

Management options

This new high-performance switch has a complete configuration firmware with the same options as always. Thanks to the QNAP Switch System (QSS), which has a very easy-to-use graphical user interface, we will have the following protocols at our disposal:

  • LACP: we will be able to perform Link Aggregation of two or more network ports, with the aim of providing ultra-fast trunk links, logically joining several physical ports.
  • VLAN: we have the possibility to configure different tagged and untagged VLANs to create different subnets in the professional local network
  • ACL: we can configure an access control list to allow or deny traffic.
  • RSTPWe can configure multiple redundant switches and use RSTP to avoid loops at the layer 2 level.

This new switch has the same graphical user interface as always, if you already know the graphical user interface of QNAP, this model has exactly the same functionalities, including updating the firmware through the Internet, without the need to download the firmware and install it manually.
